Sailing the Seas of Kubernetes Resource Management - KubeCon+CloudNativeCon Europe 2024

Aya Ozawa - Member of Technical Staff, CloudNatix

Introduction

This past March, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) hosted KubeCon+CloudNativeCon Europe 2024, a conference that focused on the latest cloud-native technologies and drew over 12,000 attendees. I had the opportunity of co-presenting a session titled “To Infinity and Beyond: Seamless Autoscaling with in-Place Resource Resize for Kubernetes Pods,” which delved into Kubernetes resource management, a subject of importance for efficiently running applications on this platform.

Remarkably, over 1,500 individuals bookmarked our presentation, underscoring the topic’s significance. Actually, the turnout exceeded the venue’s capacity, a testament to the pressing challenges many face in Kubernetes resource management.

The Presentation in Focus

In this session, we explored the complexity of setting Pod resources correctly like CPU and memory. These configurations are crucial for the efficient and reliable operation of applications on Kubernetes. However, the task is far from straightforward. Resource values are often not set or set only in initial phases and remain unadjusted, leading to suboptimal application performance and resource utilization.

VPA (Vertical Pod Autoscaler) automates such setups and leverages historical usage data to dynamically adjust resource allocation. However, existing approaches to resource updates necessitate Pod recreation, posing availability risks for some workloads like AI/ML. The in-place resource resizing feature, currently in alpha phase, will eliminate these concerns and allow seamless resource updates without Pod disruptions.

Our presentation delved into the intricacies of Kubernetes resource management, shedding light on existing challenges and future features. By elucidating the benefits of in-place resource resizing, we aimed to empower our audience with actionable insights for effective Pod resource management.
